Green
Lights Overview Green
Lights is a voluntary, non-regulatory U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program
which promotes energy-efficient lighting. By reducing energy use, the program
saves money for participating organizations and creates a cleaner environment. Participants
in the program are committed as partners, allies, and endorsers. Partners include
public and private organizations of all types who agree to upgrade their floor
space to energy-efficient lighting. The commitment involves surveying 90% of all
applicable floor space and upgrading where cost-effective within five years. Allies
include utilities, manufacturers, and related lighting businesses that support
the program. Endorsers are professional associations, boards, institutes, etc.
who endorse the goals of the program. The
State of Ohio became a Green Lights partner in 1993 when Governor George V. Voinovich
signed the U.S. EPA Green Lights Memorandum of Understanding. This act committed
state government to survey and upgrade 35 million square feet of floor space to
energy-efficient lighting. The Office of Energy Services administers this program
for the state. In
the process of fulfilling its Green Lights requirements, the state has completed
many interesting projects that includes the Department
