DAS wins another energy savings award

-- GSD Office of the State Architect, November 2004

The DAS Office of Energy Services is among 12 honorees receiving the 2004 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency.

Presented Nov. 17, the award recognizes Energy Services for making improvements to the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Improvements were made to the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and lighting systems. Water conservation measures also were incorporated.

The upgrades were made through a partnership with the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority and Limbach Company of Columbus. The project saved approximately $174,570 in energy costs during its first year of operation. It is guaranteed to save at least $1.6 million over 10 years, equating to about 16 percent of the energy bill at the Sandusky facility before the improvements.

This project is among 18 performance-based contract projects that have been administered through Energy Services since 1996. These projects already have saved the state more than $2 million annually in energy costs.

The governor’s award program, which is administered by the Ohio Department of Development, is open to public and private sector organizations.

DAS Energy Services, which is part of the Office of the State Architect, has received many awards including the 2003 Innovations Award from the National Association of State Facilities Administrators and Governor’s Awards for Energy Efficiency in 2000 and 2002. Such recognition has spurred interest nationwide from other states such as Indiana, New Jersey and New Mexico who are developing guaranteed energy savings programs.
